Council Approves hotel occupancy tax ordinance

Travelers can expect to pay a little more to stay in a Dalhart motel. The Dalhart City Council passed Ordinance 2013-01, which is a new Hotel Tax Ordinance. Under the ordinance, the city tax on a motel room will increase from 5% to 7%. The owners or operators of hotels and motels in Dalhart pay this money directly to the city. The state charges a 6% tax rate, meaning that the overall tax paid on a motel room in Dalhart will increase from 11% to 13%. The new tax rate will be effective February 1.
The increase is expected to generate over another $100,000 to the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund. The money is disbursed to organizations that have activities that bring visitors to Dalhart. Recipients of the funds include the XIT Rodeo and Reunion Association, Dalhart Area Chamber of Commerce, XIT Museum, La Rita Theatre, Dalhart Senior Citizens Association, and the XIT Rangers. Beginning this year, a portion of the funds will be used to purchase memberships for each Dalhart motel in the Texas Lodging Association. This association’s website is used by several people looking for places to stay on their travels and now all of Dalhart’s motels will be listed on the website. Motels that have already purchased membership will be reimbursed from this fund.
