In larger, more populated areas where often, there are several hospitals, the nurses stations in Labor and Delivery buzz with excitement on December 31 as each one draws closer and closer to the New Year’s baby for the city, town or county.
In Dalhart, we almost always wait for days after January first to claim our New Year’s baby. On Monday, January 7 Dalhart Texan publisher, Susan Clay contacted Coon Memorial Hospital with the magic question, “Hello, this is Susan Clay, do we have a New Year’s baby...yet?” The voice on the other end of the phone line replied disappointedly, “No, maybe by tomorrow.” Then at 5:10 p.m., 10 short minutes after the Texan had gone to press Evelin Dayana Huaracha arrived in Dalhart.
Baby Evelin weighed in at eight pounds and two ounces. She was welcomed by her mother, Modesta Parra, her father Antonio Huaracha, her big brother David and the entire staff of Coon Memorial Hospital. Happy New Year to Baby Evelin and her family.
