With the arrival of the New Year comes the annual Bi County Livestock Show in Dalhart. The 2013 show will begin on January 16 and run through the 19.
The event is a joint effort by 4-H and FFA members from both Dallam and Hartley Counties. The event is an important part of the participants’ lives, and many benefits arise from participating in both 4-H and FFA.
One of the positive points about the stock show is that the participants experience first hand the role the agricultural industry plays in the local area. In addition, the children involved in these programs learn responsibility by caring for the animals that they show. By taking care of their animals and seeing that all of their needs are met, the kids really learn to appreciate what our local farmers and ranchers do on a day to day basis.
According to recent Consumer Co-Op reports, Dallam and Hartley counties are among the highest corn producing counties in the state. In addition to farming, the livestock industry also plays a major part in the local economy.
