Jotting Judi - Mary Moments
It appears, at least the historians say, that Mary was only about fourteen years old when she was visited by the angel and given the news that she had been chosen to carry in her womb, Baby Jesus.
I enjoy thinking about the events that took place in that small village town, especially to Mary. We know she was all alone when the angel paid her a visit and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Scripture says she was greatly troubled by his words. I guess so! And that was just the beginning. The dialog between the two of them was astonishing. He gave the rest of the message and little Mary responded with questions. Big questions! Then came her humble response, “May it be to me as you have said.” Satisfied, the angel left.
She probably wished she would have asked a few more questions because now they were coming fast. No chance for rewind or instant replay. She had no witness to attest to what had just happened. And now she must face family, friends and Joseph. Recalling what the angel told her about her relative, Elizabeth who was also going to have a child, she decided to leave Nazareth and pay Elizabeth a visit. Perhaps her parents helped her make that choice. (Growing up “in my day,” girls were often “sent to their aunt’s house,” and we all knew what THAT meant!”) We do know that tongues would wag and people would not accept Mary’s incredible story.
