In the opening game of district play two teams wearing purple and gold faced off against each other. River Road played a very good game but were no match for the home colors of Dalhart. The Wolves first district match was a 41-10 victory. The game was never in doubt, Dalhart’s offense had a total of 489 yards while holding the Wildcats to 246 yards.
The Dalhart running game dominated River Road with 392 yards and the stellar defense kept the pressure on the Cats all night, holding them to only 103 yards rushing. Dominic Baca is returning to form after an injury earlier in the season. Baca led all rushers with 154 yards on nine carries, Terrell Burks had three carries for 85 yards and Val Diaz also had three carries for 53 yards.
The game started out bad for the Wildcats when they made the mistake of winning the toss but decided to kick off to Dalhart. Guillermo Davila returned the kickoff 55 yards to the River Road 35. Baca carried the ball nine yards to the 21 but on the next play the Wolves fumbled the exchange from the center and River Road recovered at the 15. A personal foul against the Wolves moved the ball to the 30 and then an offside call against the Wolves gave the Wildcats a first down at the 40. The Dalhart defense stiffened and forced a punt. The Wolves let the punt roll down to the 2 where they started their next drive. The Wolves put together a 98 yard drive to take the lead. Dalhart showed a lot of poise to start the drive with Skylar Wilt passing for 14 yards out of the end zone to Burks for a first down at the 17. Burks then carried for 30 yards to the 44. Dalhart continued to rip off big chunks of yardage with a 24 yard carry by Burks to the 31 yard line. Val Diaz put the cap on the drive with a 31 yard touchdown run and after the extra point kick by O’scotty Castro the Wolves led 7-0 with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
