HOSTS Program needs mentors for 2012-2013 school year

Posted by: tdt -

The students in Dalhart need help from the community. Think about it and say “yes.” HOST (Help One Student To Succeed) is being implemented at Dalhart Intermediate beginning on September 24. This highly successful program involves students being helped by mentors, one-to-one, to improve their skills and get up to grade level. Volunteers usually give 25 minutes per week to mentor students.
HOSTS is beneficial in a number of ways: helping students in school now so they have a better chance to succeed later, keeping students in school who are at risk of dropping out, helping volunteers understand more about the local schools and young people and giving volunteers the good feeling of being valuable service to their community.
Mentors meet with the same student each time they come to school, at a regular time convenient for them. Students in the HOSTS Program have made phenomenal academic gains while staying in school improving attitudes and performance in their class. Many students and mentors develop long-lasting friendships.
