Dwayne Thaxton retires from the Navy

Dwayne Thaxton, formerly of Dalhart was honored with a retirement ceremony from the Navy on May 29, 2009. He was born and raised in Dalhart, and graduated from Dalhart High School in 1985. He joined the Navy in 1988 and had his basic training in San Diego, CA and then went to Millington, TN for AME-A school. From there he went to Norfolk, VA from 1988-1992 and was a Squadron HM-14, a helicopter mechanic. While in Norfolk he was sent to serve in Desert Storm for four months. He was on the USS Trippolli, one of the ships that took damage from hitting a mine. From Norfolk he went to Amarillo as a recruiter from 1992-1995, and then to Rota, Spain from 1995-1998 where he worked on P3 airplanes in Squadron BQ-2. He returned to the United States to Lubbock from 1998-2001 as a recruiter in charge of a seven man recruiting station. He went back to Amarillo from 2001-2003 where he was a Zone Supervisor for the Navy Recruiting District out of San Antonio covering the panhandle of Texas and parts of Oklahoma and New Mexico. From 2003-2006, he was in Denver, CO as supervisor of the North Metro Zone responsible for Northern Colorado and Western Kansas. His final duty was a recruiting instructor with Naval Orientation Recruit Unit at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL.

At his ceremony he received the Navy Commendation Medal, a letter from Presidents

Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama, as well as Governor Perry of Texas and Governor Crist of Florida. He received his U.S. flag that was flown over the USS Chief out in the Persian Gulf during the week of his retirement. He retired after 21 years as a Chief Navy Career Counselor. His most notable accomplishments that he is most proud of are achieving rank of Chief Petty Officer which is congressionally appointed, and also Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist and Master Training Specialist.

He lives in Milton, FL with his two sons Chase and Chance, and daughter Skylar and works as a placement specialist for Remedy Intelligence Staffing in Pensacola, FL. His parents are Glen and Shirley Woodruff of Dumas and Roy and Donna Thaxton of Colorado. He is the grandson of the late Faye LaFever of Dalhart. His family is very proud of his accomplishments.
