Meet Your Neighbor

Elmer Long recently moved from Hereford to become the Service Manager at Warren-CAT in Dalhart. He is a quiet man with a willing heart, open to lend a hand and eager to help others.

He was born in Kansas and spent eleven of his "growing up years" in Africa while his parents served as missionaries with the Wesleyan Church. He lived four years in Swaziland and seven in Zambia.

Elmer recalls how impressive it was to see the Victoria Falls in Zambia. He also enjoyed going to school in the town of Livingston, named for the famous missionary, David Livingston. Both of Elmer’s parents were pastors and after his father passed away his mother continued to pastor various churches in Kansas.

Elmer studied Diesel Technology at Western Nebraska Technology and began his career in diesel mechanics in 1972, continuing it until the present.

He has one son and four step-children. His family has given him ten grandchildren. When asked what he does for hobbies or free time, he smiled big and said, "I spend it with my grandkids in Amarillo."

He moved to Texas in 1976 from Oshkosh, NE. He mused, "I’ve never made enough money to get out of Texas. I made enough to move to Dalhart, so here I am."

Elmer’s favorite food is a good, juicy steak. His motto to live by is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
