Balloons dotted the sky over Coon Memorial Home

The Coon Memorial Home held its annual balloon launch in front of the nursing home on Texas Avenue on Tuesday, June 9th at 3:30 p.m. Residents and staff at the home had several balloons each. Friends and family of the residents were also in attendance as the balloons flew skyward.

The Pink Ladies assisted Activities Director Stevie Brewer hand out balloons. Before the event began, 320 balloons were filled with helium. Stevie noted, "It’s an awful lot of work for just a few seconds of fun, but it is so worth it!" The multi-colored balloons were imprinted with information about the Dallam and Hartley Counties Hospital District. In years past, people finding the balloons have contacted the hospital from as far away as New Mexico.

Tuesday’s afternoon winds quickly carried the balloons northeastward. The residents and their friends and family excitedly wondered where the balloons might travel to and whose day might be brightened when they land.

Stevie stated that the balloon launch has been an annual occurrence during National Hospital Week each year. During her four-year tenure at the nursing home, the launch has always taken place and she stated that it had been going on before she took over. She noted, "None of us even know why the launch got started. We do it every year and it is really one of the events that I look forward to the most."

National Hospital Week focuses public attention on the many contributions hospitals make to their communities and is a traditional time for hospitals to recognize staff and volunteers. Since its inception in 1921, it has grown into the nation’s largest health care event. It began when a magazine editor suggested that more information about hospitals might alleviate public fears about the "shrouded" institutions of the day.
