Bill Cunningham elected President and CEO of Dalhart Federal

The Boards of Directors of Dalhart Federal Savings and Loan Association, Dalhart Federal Mutual Holding Company, Dalhart Federal Corporation, Texas Panhandle Title Company, Inc. and Progress Resources, Inc. have elected William A. “Bill” Cunningham as President and CEO of all companies. Bill has served on the board since October 10, 1985, and joined the Association as Executive Vice President and General Counsel in June 2003.
Bill was born in Oklahoma City on August 25, 1945 to Dr. John H. and Jane Ann (Kraft) Cunningham. The Cunningham family moved to Dalhart in March of 1953 when Bill was seven. He is a 1963 graduate of Dalhart High School and was a Wolf during the glory days when the football team advanced in the playoffs. This was during Coach Ethridge’s tenure.
Cunningham served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 to 1971 when he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He was stationed on several air bases in the weather career field. He spent 18 months on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean. He participated in football and basketball during his years in the Air Force and played in tournaments in different countries including Germany and England.
He graduated from Texas Tech University with a B.A. degree in 1973, and in 1976 received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Texas Tech School of Law. He was licensed and admitted to the Texas State Bar the same year.
He went to work for John David and Homer Davis in their law firm and after about 18 months became a partner in the firm of Davis, David and Cunningham. He continued in private practice until June of 2003. He was also Hartley County Attorney from July 1990 to October 2003.
Bill and Marsha Kay Wedel were married on January 2, 1972 in Dalhart. Marsha teaches at DHS, has a Masters Degree in Home Economics, and is currently teaching classes in that area and teaching TAKS classes.
Bill is a past president of the All Sports Boosters Club and Lions Club, where he was Boss Lion in 1981 and 2007-08. He has worked with both the Boys and Girls Little Dribbler Programs and served as President of the Boys for eight years. He served as president of the 69th District Bar Association, and has been a member of several other legal organizations.
As a member of the State Bar of Texas, he is also a current member of the Texas Bar Foundation, an honorary group which provides legal aid for underprivileged and indigent people. To become a member of this organization an attorney must be invited and have a sponsor.
He served on the Board of Trustees for the Dalhart Independent School District during 1988-1990. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Dalhart Senior Citizens Association, Inc. from 2003 to the present, the City of Dalhart Planning and Zoning Commission from 2005 to the present, and the Board of Directors of the Dalhart Country Club from 2008 to the present.
The Cunninghams have four children – William Allen Cunningham, Jr., a clinical pharmacist with Covenant Medical Systems, and wife, Lisa, of Lubbock; Dr. John Ryan Cunningham, in the last year of his gastroenterology fellowship in Columbia, Missouri, and wife, Kandis, of Columbia, Missouri; Marshall Trent Cunningham, an assistant golf pro at Lakeridge Country Club, and wife, Julee, of Lubbock; and Derek Collin Cunningham, a recent graduate of Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, of Dalhart. They have four grandchildren – Claire and Caroline Cunningham of Lubbock, and Drennon and Dalton Cunningham of Columbia, Missouri.
The family attends Central United Methodist Church.
